Yes. Our staff handle customer communication in English. You can message us in English on LINE, call us, or use the contact form, and you will get a reply in English. Quotes, explanations of repairs, and shaken paperwork are all explained in English. We have been serving foreign residents in Naka-ku, Yokohama, for years, and English is part of how we work every day, not an add-on.
Yes. The easiest way is LINE. Send us a message with (1) your car's make and model, (2) what you need, such as shaken, repair, oil change, or tyres, and (3) a photo of your shaken sticker or the car registration (車検証 / shakensho) if you have it. We will reply in English with a quote and available dates. You never need to write or speak Japanese at any step.
You are welcome to drop by during our hours. Please understand that we may not be able to look at your car immediately, because other customers' bookings are already scheduled. If you can, message us on LINE before you come so we can tell you when someone will be free. For urgent problems such as warning lights, strange noises, or a flat tyre, come straight in and we will do our best to help.
Bring three things: your car, your 車検証 (shakensho, the vehicle registration certificate, usually kept in the glove box), and your current 自賠責保険 certificate (jibaiseki, the compulsory insurance, usually in the same folder). If you are not sure which documents you have, bring the whole folder and we will sort it out with you. We are a government-certified workshop (認証工場), so the inspection and repairs can all be handled here. We will explain every line of the quote in English before any work starts.
Yes. We regularly service Y-plate vehicles and have helped many SOFA-status owners through shaken. We handle the inspection and any repairs needed to pass. Base-side registration and paperwork remain your responsibility with your base vehicle registration office, but we can tell you in English exactly what the car needs mechanically and what the inspection covers. Message us on LINE with your plate type and vehicle details to get started.
Bring the inspection result sheet with you, or send a photo on LINE. It lists exactly which items failed. We will go through each item in English, explain what it means, and give you a quote to fix only what is needed to pass. Once the repairs are done, we handle the re-inspection. A failed shaken is common and fixable. The important thing is to act before the current shaken expires.
It depends on who is in the car. For one or two people, a kei car (軽自動車, the small yellow-plate cars) is the practical choice: lower tax, lower insurance, and it fits the parking spaces in Naka-ku, Motomachi, Yamate, and Honmoku. For families, a compact car with sliding doors is what most of our customers end up choosing. Sliding doors matter more than you expect in tight Japanese parking lots when you are getting children in and out. If you want something with character for weekend trips, we are an authorized Suzuki sub-dealer and can talk you through the Jimny, new or used. Tell us your family size, your parking situation, and your budget on LINE, and we will suggest two or three realistic options.
Often, yes. Two years of car ownership in Japan can cost less than two years of car rental or car-sharing, especially for families. When you leave, we can help you sell the car. We buy used cars ourselves and can give you an honest appraisal and explain the deregistration process in English. Tell us your planned departure date when you buy, and we will keep it in mind when recommending a car.
Yes. Hillside Auto is an authorized Suzuki sub-dealer. We can order any current Suzuki model, including the Jimny, Jimny Sierra, Spacia, Solio, and Swift, and handle the whole process in English: grade and option selection, the order, registration, insurance, and delivery. After delivery, servicing and warranty work are done here, so you deal with the same people from purchase onward.
Shaken cost has three parts: our fixed workshop fee, the legal fees (weight tax, compulsory insurance and the inspection stamp, set by the government), and any repairs needed to pass. Including the legal fees, the total starts from ¥61,840 for a kei car, ¥78,350 for a standard car and ¥79,550 for an imported car, before any repairs. Our workshop fee for each vehicle class is on our price list. Send us your car's details and a photo of your shaken sticker on LINE, and we will give you an itemised quote in English before you commit to anything.
Yes. We accept credit cards and cashless payments (QR code and e-money) for repairs, shaken work, and vehicle purchases. One exception: the legal portion of shaken fees, meaning the vehicle weight tax and the compulsory insurance, must be paid in cash. We will show this part separately on your quote so you know the amount in advance.
